The Secret to Losing Weight

I’m going to let you in on a secret. The secret to losing weight and maintaining a healthy life style. It has nothing to do with counting calories, nothing to do with protein, carbs, fat, starch, processed foods, fast foods. It has nothing to do with joining a gym, working out, running a marathon. No, the simple secret to losing weight is motivation. It’s the engine that will start you and finish you on your weight loss journey. Motivation is different from a Goal. Do you know how many goals are established every January 1st. “this is the year I will lose that 30 pounds. I am going to start right after this New Year’s party is over.”

Some examples of motivation: From “My Secret Trainer” Paige was clearly motivated to lose weight after really examining herself in a mirror without any clothes on. She chose a pair of jeans in her closet as a target, imagining when she could fit back in those jeans she would have completed her journey.

One of my star students of my training course was perplexed when I asked him why he thought it was necessary to eat all of the food he had ordered at a restaurant. He looked at me and stated “because I need the energy to move my large body around” His story and many others are in my training program, but as it turned out after a visit to the doctor before starting my diet regimen he was informed he had type 2 diabetes, and a faltering heart. Talk about motivation? His results were astonishing and he actually completed the London Marathon last year.

My motivation, also detailed in my course, but I was filmed in a family game show over the summer without a shirt. When I saw my image on a big screen in front of my friends and family I wanted to shrink away and hide. I still get flush when I think about it. That image was burned in my mind that day and served as my motivation for my journey and beyond.

What will your motivation be? Some thoughts on motivation. Make it realistic, but not easy. Challenge yourself but be prepared for setbacks. Set some simple milestones. “I will cut processed foods by 50% in the next 30 days.” Make sure your motivation has fun built in. Pick up a tennis racquet. Join a dance class. A self defense class. Give it some thought and then get started. Don’t procrastinate another day. This is your time. Start the journey today!
